Tidal information for anywhere in the world can be obtained via several different sources.

  • You can access the internet for a tidal prediction service,

  • You can purchase software to run on your PC.

  • You can buy a printed copy for the area in which you are sailing

Running software on your PC is perhaps the most satisfactory solution as you will have access to Perpetual Worldwide Tidal information onboard your yacht (if you have a computer). We have selected the best solutions for the options discussed above

Internet tidal predictions.

There are many internet sites that provide tidal information, however there are only a few sites that provide very good free tidal predictions. We have listed the best below. Note disclaimers and accuracy for each system you use.

XTide Tide Prediction

This is a very useful online system. Enter the name of the port (make sure the port name is valid (E.G. if you want a tide for Madeira Island you must use the port name of Funchal). Then when you have selected and run the program for your port and received today's tides you can then select month or year tide prediction for that port. This is great, because unlike many other online tide predictions you can get predictions for a day, month or year, which you can then print off.

Note the disclaimer at the bottom of the Xtide page on their site. These type of tide predictions may not be completely accurate, a time and height discrepancy may exist.

Worldwide 7 days

Provided by the UK Hydrographic Office for the whole world but only provides predictions for seven days. It is very good and if you select the printer friendly button you can print off 7 days tides complete with graph.

Pacific, Australia, Antarctica

Provided by the Australian Met Office (BOM), this site provides 7 day tidal predictions for all Pacific Islands and regions, Australia, and Antarctica.

USA

Excellent full annual tide tables for all USA ports.

PC software.

Some of this software is free and some of it you have to pay for, see comments below and details on the relevant site.

Free software

WXTide32

MS Windows based. A good free downloadable program. You have to download the software and run it on your PC. All instructions are on the site.

Stormy Weather

A DOS based system, OK for a free program but not ideal

Xtide

For UNIX, Linux, Mac OSX. Xtide is Unix software.  It is intended to compile and run correctly on any reasonably modern version of Unix. Xtide can work with X-windows, plain text terminals, or the web.

Thank you to Thomas H. for the info

Jtides

All platforms. JTides runs fine under Windows. It also runs fine under Linux, Apple Macintosh's new OS X, and many other environments.

Thank you to Thomas H. for the info

Pay for software

Total Tide

A very expensive piece of software probably outside the budget of most cruising yachts, designed by UKHO for shipping, but very good

Printed Worldwide Tidal almanacs.

There are many published Tide tables in many formats which you will be able to obtain locally in most regions. We have provided only those publications which provide worldwide predictions.

UKHO

The UKHO (United Kingdom Hydrographic Office) publish world tide tables, you have to pay for this service now! You can get the tables as either hard copy or PDF files.
