Information for the Suez Canal is not
that clear-cut because although in theory there are set prices and
rules, in reality it can take a lot of patience to get things sorted
out. Bribes are the norm and you have to negotiate every step of the
way. We have included a few articles below of peoples experiences
as well as contacts for agents etc. However, do not assume an agent will
mean no hassle, although it will be considerably less hassle than if you
try and transit without an agent. |

The Voyage
of the Blackwattle June 2004 |
Today's pilot, Mohammed, has warmly
sparkling eyes. I examine his eyes and expression closely, and his body
language, to see any sign of perfidy. I should have done this on the
last leg. I cannot see anything but real goodwill, and this turns out
to be true. He is a delight to have on board, and assists not only us,
but the other boats as well, to tie up at the pretty difficult Port
Fuoad Yacht Club in Port Said |

Sea Witch June 2003 |
After completing a few projects, doing
some shopping and a quick trip to the local go kart track, we headed for
the Suez Canal with some trepidation. We'd already learned to deal with
small amounts of baksheesh (bribes/tips/presents) in our daily lives in
Egypt but we had heard from fellow cruisers that the canal transit could
be rife with baksheesh and other attempts to extract large amounts of
money from the cruisers |

October 2003 |
So far so good - we had managed to anchor
off Suez Yacht Club in 40-plus knots, and our agent Prince of the Red
Sea seemed to have everything in hand |

Maverick Email Report May 2002 |
For a yacht coming north, transit is
arranged at Port Suez by an agent, through whom fees are paid based on a
formula that determines your Suez Canal Tonnage after an official
measurer comes aboard |

|
Encyclopaedia of the Orient |
The canal is 163 km long, and has a
minimum width of 60 metres. The canal cuts through three lakes, Manzala,
Timsah in the middle, and the Bitter Lakes further south. |
|
The
Suez Canal |
The idea of a canal linking the
Mediterranean to the Red Sea dates back to ancient times. Unlike the
modern Canal, earlier ones linked the Red Sea to the Nile, therefore
forcing the ships to sail along the River on their journey from Europe
to India |
|
Encyclopedia.com |
The canal is somewhat more than 100 mi
(160 km) long. Proceeding S from Port Said, it runs in an almost
undeviating straight line to Lake Timsah. From there a cutting leads to
the Bitter Lakes (now one body of water), and a final cutting then
reaches the Gulf of Suez. The canal has no locks and can accommodate all
but the largest ships. |

More
History |
There seems to have always been interest
in a link between the Mediterranean and Red Seas. Most of the early
efforts were directed towards a link from the Nile to the Red Sea.
Strabo and Pliny record that the earliest effort was directed by
Senwosret I, but no evidence that there was an actual canal built
exists. Under Necho II (610-595 BC) a canal was built ............ |
