Balboa Yacht Club |
The Balboa Yacht Club (BYC) is
located at north latitude 8 degrees 56' plus 2763.40 feet, and west
longitude 79 degrees 33' plus 2766.81 feet and is on the west side
of the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal just south of the Bridge
of the Americas.
The BYC has two marine railways to
haul yachts for bottom maintenance. At the end of a 640 foot pier
and 100 foot steel ramp is a floating fuel barge where yachts can
tie up to take on fuel, water and passengers. Near the end of the
pier are also five finger piers which can be rented on an hourly
basis for boat maintenance and cleaning. The BYC operates launches
24 hours per day to transport members and visitors to and from their
boats. The club maintains approximately 130 moorings in two
anchorages north and south of the pier. Visitor's will be assigned a
mooring on arrival at the BYC

The Panama Canal -
Three transits in eight days |
A Caribbean Compass article dated 2004 :
Yes, we did three transits but Koncerto
only did one of them. The first was educational, the second
nerve-racking, and the third FUN! |

Line
Handling on the Panama Canal |
Line Handlers handle the lines that go
from the cruising vessel to the canal locks. There are four Line
Handlers on each cruising vessel – two on the bow and two on the stern.
When the vessel transits a lock, the vessel must be kept in the center
of the lock, and this is done by lines and those that handle them – a
Line Handler. Imagine a square hammock with a rope at each corner
holding the hammock steady and centered |

Sail Magazine
article |
SAIL has received a number of
communications from Craig Owings of the Pedro Miguel Boat Club, on the
Panama Canal. While this letter reflects only one side of the story, it
speaks to long-term trends at the Canal, where yacht-transit costs have
been rising and the welcome has become less warm as the new operators of
the ditch work our their profit model. We pick up inside a recent
mailing from Mr. Owings, opening with a comment about Alberto Aleman
Zubieta, the Administrator of the Authoridad del Canal de Panama (ACP). |

For many cruisers, transiting the Panama
Canal signals a milestone in their cruising careers. Whether transiting
from the Caribbean to the Pacific and points beyond, or voyaging from
the Pacific on to the destinations in the Caribbean, the six locks and
45 miles of waterways offer an alluring short cut between continents.

History of Panama
Canal |
The history of the Panama Canal goes back
to 16th century. After realizing the riches of Peru, Ecuador, and Asia,
and counting the time it took the gold to reach the ports of Spain, it
was suggested c.1524 to Charles V, that by cutting out a piece of land
somewhere in Panama, the trips would be made shorter and the risk of
taking the treasures through the isthmus would justify such an
enterprise. A survey of the isthmus was ordered and subsequently a
working plan for a canal was drawn up in 1529. The wars in Europe and
the thirsts for the control of kingdoms in the Mediterranean Sea simply
put the project on permanent hold. |
