There are several ways to communicate from a yacht at sea, but as with all things, it comes down to cost. The choices for onboard communications are basically systems using either an SSB radio or Satellite systems. On top of these two basic platforms are several systems from free HAM systems to expensive satellite solutions. Don't forget to factor in the running costs as well as the initial purchase costs of all elements to the system. If you are looking to put a system onboard it is well worth talking to others who have the system you are considering. There is quite a lot of information in the links below that explain in detail what the systems are and how much it will cost.

A good place to start is by reading the Cruising Club of America offshore communications document which is up to date and very informative.
