Wind generators are a popular alternative energy source. With the right system positioned well on the yacht these generators can provide a good source of power to keep the batteries topped up. There are several considerations so we have provided articles at the end of this page which discuss and explore the  possibilities. It is well worthwhile to read and compare each manufacturers descriptions of their products to compare such considerations as start-up wind speed, power output for different wind speeds, and blade noise etc.

We have listed the major marine wind generator manufacturers at the top. This is followed by further information and articles that may assist with the selection of a suitable system for your requirements.

Wind Generators

AeroGen Based on twenty years experience Aerogen Wind Generators cover the needs of weekend, cruising and live-aboard yachtsmen. Lighter and smaller than some units with similar performances
AIR-X marine

The AIR Marine incorporates a new microprocessor based technology that results in increased performance, improved battery charging capability, greater reliability and the reduction of “flutter” noise from the machine

Ampair

Designed to survive the severe marine environment. Heavy duty, all-weather generator, sealed to keep corrosion out.

Permanent installation on yacht as fit & forget unit

Duogen DuoGen's air turbine is unique, consisting of five precision injection-moulded blades. They are so consistent in weight that they can be assembled in any order and always produce a finely balanced turbine. The blades feature not only twist and taper, but also a highly advanced low Re. aerofoil section which continuously varies in camber from root to tip to maximise aerodynamic efficiency.
Kiss This wind generator was designed to supply the energy needs of the average cruising sailboat from the wind energy available in a typical Caribbean anchorage.
Rutland Uses for the Rutland quickly diversified and they were soon also seen on ocean going yachts, remote telecommunication sites, static caravans, isolated homes, navigational buoys, clinics in Africa, etc
Windbugger Windbugger self-starts in 6 knots of wind, generating 1/4-1/2 amps, and in 25 knots of wind, will generate 18 amps and more

Information and articles

Sailnet article

Sailors who are planning some extended cruising sooner or later must address the issue of how to keep their batteries full without endless hours of engine running time. For cruisers with moderate to hefty electrical loads, the answer may be blowin' in the wind. That's because wind-powered generators can be an efficient, effective charging source whenever your boat is away from the dock.........
