During our 10 years of cruising we were involved both directly and indirectly in several significant incidents. In all cases the yachting community played a major part in providing support and assistance to other yacht crews in need of help. Other sources of help are listed above with links to sites that may provide assistance or information to help resolve problems.

Your main sources of help are  listed below :-

  • Other yacht crews - it's amazing how much the yachting community can achieve in an emergency. There's a lot of experience and knowledge out there - get on the radio. The HF radio, and the cruising nets will provide a lot of practical help and support.
  • Local authorities - the amount of help varies between don't care and great. If they are not forthcoming then you may waste a lot of time trying, normally however there will be help if you can find the right person.
  • Your embassy - you may need to contact your local embassy (see contacts above), they will either be able to provide direct assistance or at least point you in the right direction.
  • Pirate attacks - unfortunately pirate attacks are becoming more common. After the event you should report these to the Pirate reporting centre, (see above), see also how to avoid attacks (under pirate attacks above).
  • Medical help - your first port of call should be the local doctors or hospitals, they vary from poor to excellent, but on the whole, even in the shabbiest looking surgeries you can find excellent help.
